Panel Discussion: Freshwater agreements and the human right to water - Geneva University

On Tuesday the 7th of November, the Geneva University faculty of Law and the Geneva Water Hub organised a panel discussion on freshwater agreements and the human right to water. At this session, Dr. Tobias Schmitz, senior advisor water resources and monitoring at GIWEH, presented our work in progress on guidelines for a human right based approach to the management and protection of water resources in Africa. These guidelines are being developed by Dr. Schmitz and Dr. Helène Boussard for the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. The document will support African states in realizing the human right to water within the framework of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. Once approved by the Commission, the guidelines will be open to public comments in cooperation with the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to water and sanitation, Professor Leo Heller. The guidelines are expected to be published in April 2017.
